How the UX Researcher & Designer skill works
UX Researcher & Designer
Toolkit for user-centered research and experience design.
Core Capabilities
- Data-driven persona generation
- Customer journey mapping
- Usability testing frameworks
- Research synthesis and insights
- Design validation methods
Persona Generation
Build research-backed personas from user data and interviews rather than assumptions.
- Analyze behavior patterns across the available sample (usage data, interviews, surveys).
- Identify archetypes -- cluster users into distinct behavioral groups.
- Extract psychographics -- goals, motivations, frustrations, mental models.
- Generate scenarios -- concrete situations in which the persona uses the product.
- State design implications -- what each persona demands from the experience.
- Score confidence by sample size; flag personas built on thin data as provisional.
A persona should include: name/archetype, key demographics, goals, pain points, behaviors, a representative scenario, and design implications.
Journey Mapping
Map the end-to-end experience for a persona pursuing a goal:
- Stages -- the phases from first awareness through outcome.
- Actions -- what the user does at each stage.
- Thoughts & emotions -- their mindset and emotional highs/lows.
- Touchpoints -- where they interact with the product or brand.
- Pain points & opportunities -- friction to remove and moments to improve.
Usability Testing
- Define goals -- which tasks or hypotheses the test validates.
- Recruit representative participants matching target personas.
- Write tasks as realistic scenarios, not leading instructions.
- Measure success rate, time on task, error rate, and satisfaction.
- Observe think-aloud commentary; note where users hesitate or fail.
Research Synthesis
- Cluster raw observations into themes (affinity mapping).
- Separate what users say from what they do.
- Translate themes into prioritized, actionable insights.
- Tie each insight back to evidence and a design implication.
Output
Produce the requested research artifact -- a persona, journey map, usability-test plan, or synthesized insight set -- grounded in the supplied data, with explicit design implications and a confidence note reflecting sample size.

- Accessibility ReviewUse when the user asks to audit a design or page for accessibility — "check a11y", "is this accessible?", "run a WCAG audit" — covering color contrast, keyboard navigation, focus order, touch target size, and screen reader behavior against WCAG 2.1 AA before handoff.
- Brand Guidelines BuilderUse when the user wants Anthropic's official brand look-and-feel applied to an artifact — brand colors, typography, visual formatting, company design standards. Trigger: "use Anthropic branding", "apply our brand style". Visual identity only; not for brand voice or tone in writing (use brand-voice-enforcement).
- Brand Landing PageRuns a brand interview with no established visual direction, then generates deployment-ready landing-page HTML. Not for dashboards or app UI (use frontend-design).
- Design CritiqueUse when the user shares a design, mockup, screenshot, or Figma link and asks for feedback — "review this design", "critique this mockup", "what do you think of this screen?". Gives structured feedback on usability, hierarchy, and consistency. Not for a WCAG audit (use accessibility-review).
- Design Delivery NavigatorUse to chain UI delivery across skills -- research, design, systemize, accessibility, handoff. Not for a single critique (use design-critique).
- Design Handoff PackageUse when a design is ready for engineering and the user wants a developer handoff spec — layout, design tokens, component props, interaction states, responsive breakpoints, edge cases, animation details. Trigger: "write the handoff spec", "prep this design for devs", "spec this screen out".
