/launch-strategy $ARGUMENTS
What I Need From You
- What are you launching? (New product, major feature, minor update)
- Current audience size and engagement (email list, blog traffic, community)
- Timeline for launch
- Past launches -- what worked or did not?
- Considering Product Hunt? What is your preparation status?
The ORB Channel Framework
Structure launch marketing across three channel types. Everything should ultimately lead back to owned channels.
Owned -- you control the channel: email list, blog, podcast, branded community, website. These compound over time with no algorithm risk. Start with 1-2 based on audience. Example: Superhuman built demand through an invite-only waitlist plus one-on-one onboarding demos, creating exclusivity and word of mouth through owned relationships.
Rented -- platforms give visibility you do not control: social media, app stores, YouTube, Reddit. Pick 1-2 where your audience is active and use them to drive traffic to owned channels. Example: Notion went viral on Twitter, YouTube and Reddit, but funneled every viral post into signups and targeted email onboarding.
Borrowed -- tap someone else's audience: guest posts, podcast interviews, webinars, influencer partnerships, conference talks. Be proactive: list leaders your audience follows, pitch win-win collaborations, set up affiliate incentives. Convert borrowed attention into owned relationships.
Five-Phase Launch Approach
- Internal launch -- recruit early users one-on-one to test free; validate core functionality with friendly users.
- Alpha -- landing page with early-access signup; invite users individually; MVP working in production.
- Beta -- work through the early-access list, start teaser marketing about the problems you solve, recruit friends and influencers to test and share.
- Early access -- leak screenshots, GIFs and demos; gather usage data and feedback; expand invites in 5-10% batches or open all under "early access" framing.
- Full launch -- open self-serve signups, start charging, announce everywhere: customer email, in-app popups, website banner, blog post, social, Product Hunt / Hacker News.
Product Hunt Strategy
Before: build relationships with supporters and communities; optimize the listing (tagline, visuals, short demo video); study successful launches; prepare the team for all-day engagement. Launch day: treat it as an all-day event; respond to every comment in real time; direct traffic to your site to capture signups. After: follow up with everyone who engaged; convert traffic into email signups; continue momentum content.
Case study: Reform (form builder) studied winning launches, crafted a clear tagline and demo video, engaged in communities before launching, and hit #1 Product of the Day.
Post-Launch Momentum
- Automated onboarding email sequence introducing key features
- Repeat the announcement in your regular roundup email
- Publish comparison pages against competitors
- Add dedicated sections about the new feature across your site
Ongoing Launch Cadence
Match marketing effort to update size:
- Major (new features, overhauls): full multi-channel campaign
- Medium (integrations, UI upgrades): targeted email to relevant segments plus in-app banner
- Minor (fixes, tweaks): changelog and release notes -- signals active development
Space out releases to sustain momentum, and reuse tactics from announcements that resonated.
Launch Checklist
Pre-launch: landing page with clear value prop, email capture, early-access list, owned channels established, social profiles optimized, borrowed-channel targets identified, launch assets (screenshots, demo video, GIFs), onboarding flow, analytics. Launch day: announcement email, blog post, social posts, Product Hunt live, in-app announcement, website banner, team ready to engage, monitor feedback. Post-launch: onboarding sequence active, follow-ups sent, comparison pages published, feedback gathered, next launch moment planned.
Output
A phased launch plan tailored to the user's product, audience and timeline: channel strategy (ORB), phase-by-phase actions with goals, a launch-day run sheet, and a post-launch momentum plan.
