How the Career Pivot Translator skill works
/career-changer-translator
Translate experience from one industry into another: identify transferable skills, rewrite achievements in the target field's language, flag gaps, and craft a convincing change narrative.
Usage
/career-changer-translator $ARGUMENTS
What I Need From You
Ask the user for: current field and role, years of experience, target field and role, and their resume or key achievements (paste or upload). Also ask why they want the change -- it feeds the narrative.
Why Career Changes Are Hard
Experience doesn't map directly, industry keywords are missing, recruiters prefer safe candidates, and the "why" must convince. The counter: transferable skills, target-industry language, adjacent experience, bridge experiences, and a compelling story.
Transferable Skills Framework
Scan the user's history for: leadership (team leadership, budgets, strategic planning, stakeholder management), communication (presentations, client relations, negotiation, cross-functional collaboration), analytical (data analysis, research, process improvement, decision-making), and operational (process design, systems implementation, training, vendor management).
Translation Method
For each key bullet: keep the substance, swap the vocabulary, add scale and metrics. Example (teacher to L&D): "Taught 25 students in 5th grade classroom" becomes "Designed and delivered curriculum for 25 learners, achieving 95% proficiency through differentiated instruction and data-driven intervention."
Build a vocabulary map for the specific pivot, e.g.:
| Source Term | Target Term |
|---|---|
| Lesson plans | Training curriculum |
| Platoon/Unit | Team/Department |
| Guests | Customers/Clients |
| Store sales | Revenue generation |
| Patient care | Client service |
Common pivots to draw on: teacher to L&D, military to corporate leadership, retail to sales/account management, hospitality to customer success, healthcare to tech/pharma.
Resume Strategy for Changers
- Lead with a transferable summary: "[Target role] professional with [X] years of [transferable skill] experience. Background in [previous field] provides unique perspective on [relevant aspect]."
- Consider a hybrid format: summary, core competencies, relevant experience grouped by transferable function (e.g. PROJECT MANAGEMENT EXPERIENCE with bullets pulled from multiple jobs), then chronological additional experience, then education.
- Recommend bridge experiences: volunteering in the target field, freelance projects, certifications, side projects, professional organizations.
The "Why" Narrative
Good reasons: natural evolution of interests, a specific spark, skills naturally translating, seeking growth. Never say: burned out, hate my job, want more money, seems easier.
Story framework: [DISCOVERY] "Through [experience], I discovered..." then [CONNECTION] "my experience in [old field] gives me a unique perspective because..." then [ACTION] "to prepare, I've [certifications/projects]..." then [VISION] "I'm excited to bring [skill] to [target]."
