Refactor & Simplify
Software development skill, available on Zeplik
Refactor & Simplify is a ready-to-run software development skill on Zeplik. Refactor code you are already touching to cut complexity without changing its behavior. Ask in plain language and Zeplik applies the skill's method for you inside the conversation, on whichever AI model you prefer.
The Refactor & Simplify skill loads automatically when your request matches it, or you can invoke it directly by typing /simplify-code in any chat. It works with attachments, connectors, and any model that supports the task, so you get the same expert method every time without setting anything up.
What the Refactor & Simplify skill can do
- Remove single-use abstractions and needless indirection
- Delete speculative config, flags, and unused parameters
- Flatten deeply nested logic using guard clauses and early returns
- Unify genuinely duplicated code while preserving existing behaviour

How the Refactor & Simplify skill works
Simplify code
The simplest code that solves the problem is the goal. Simplicity is measured by how quickly the next reader understands it, not by line count.
What to look for
- Needless abstraction. A helper or interface used in exactly one place is usually clearer inlined. Remove indirection that does not pay for itself.
- Speculative generality. Configuration, flags, and parameters for cases that do not exist yet. Delete them; add them back when a real case arrives.
- Duplication that has diverged. Two near-identical blocks that must change together are a bug waiting to happen. But three similar lines are better than the wrong abstraction; unify only when the shape is genuinely the same.
- Dead code and unreachable branches. Remove rather than comment out.
- Deep nesting. Flatten with early returns and guard clauses.
Rules
- Preserve behaviour. Simplification must not change what the code does; verify with existing tests before and after.
- Simplify only what you are already touching for the task. Do not open a codebase-wide cleanup under cover of a small change.
- If a piece is complex because the problem is complex, leave it and add a short comment explaining the essential difficulty instead.
