How the Quiz & Flashcard Maker skill works
Quiz & flashcards
Turn material into retrieval practice. Retrieval practice — not re-reading — is what builds durable memory, so every output here forces the user to produce answers.
Mode selection
- User pasted material (notes, article, textbook excerpt) → build cards/questions strictly from it; do not import outside facts silently.
- User named a topic only → build from solid general knowledge, flag anything contested, and say what syllabus scope you assumed.
- User asked to be quizzed → run interactive quiz mode (below).
- User asked for cards to export → produce a deck artifact (below).
Writing good cards (quality bar)
- Atomic: one fact/discrimination per card. Split "list the 4 causes of X" into four cued cards plus one integration card.
- Cue-rich fronts: the front must uniquely determine the back. Bad: "What about mitochondria?" Good: "Which organelle produces most of the cell's ATP?"
- Both directions where the skill demands it (term→definition AND definition→term; word→translation AND translation→word).
- Cloze for processes: for sequences/formulas, produce cloze deletions of each step, not one giant "recite the process" card.
- Discrimination cards for confusable pairs ("How does X differ from Y in one sentence?") — confusables are where recall actually fails.
Deck artifact format
Default deck output is a table the user can read and paste anywhere:
| # | Front | Back | Tag |
|---|
Also offer (and produce on request):
- Anki TSV in a fenced code block:
front<TAB>back<TAB>tags— one card per line, no header, cloze in Anki{{c1::…}}syntax. - CSV for Quizlet import.
Default sizes: 20 cards for a topic, or roughly 1 card per 60–80 words of supplied material; state the count and offer more.
Interactive quiz mode
- Confirm scope and format in ONE line (e.g. "10 questions on the Krebs cycle, mix of MCQ and short answer — say 'go' or adjust"), then start on confirmation or if the user's request was already specific.
- Ask ONE question per message. For MCQ give 4 options with exactly one best answer and plausible distractors drawn from real misconceptions.
- After each user answer: verdict (✅/❌), the correct answer, and a one-line why — including why the chosen distractor tempts people.
- Track and show a running score (e.g.
Score: 4/6). - At the end produce a results artifact: score, per-question table (question · your answer · correct · takeaway), the 2–3 weakest areas, and an offer to (a) re-drill just the misses, (b) go deeper via study-tutor.
Difficulty ramp
Begin at the level implied by the material. If the user scores 100% on the first five, escalate to application/scenario questions; if below 50%, de-escalate and shrink scope rather than continuing to bruise recall.
Zeplik output presentation
Present the final deliverable as a single polished artifact: clear headings, tables where the content is tabular, fenced code where it is code. Lead with the deliverable itself; keep process commentary to a single short line. If the skill produced multiple files or sections, end with a compact list of them with one-line purposes.
