How the Product Strategist skill works
Product Strategist
A strategic toolkit for a Head of Product to drive vision, alignment, and organizational excellence across the product org.
Core Capabilities
- OKR cascade generation and alignment (company -> product -> team)
- Market and competitive analysis
- Product vision and strategy frameworks
- Metrics and KPI definition
- Team scaling and organizational design
OKR Cascade
Translate company-level objectives down to product and team levels while keeping alignment explicit. Choose a strategic lens -- growth, retention, revenue, innovation, or operational -- and cascade accordingly.
- Company OKRs -- 3-5 company objectives, each with 2-4 measurable key results tied to the chosen strategy.
- Product OKRs -- for each company KR, derive product objectives whose key results are the product's contribution to that company KR.
- Team OKRs -- decompose product OKRs into team-owned objectives with owners and due dates.
- Alignment scoring -- for each lower-level OKR, state which parent KR it supports and estimate its contribution % so gaps and orphaned work are visible.
Surface any company KR with no downstream product/team coverage (a strategy gap) and any team OKR that maps to no parent (misalignment).
Market & Competitive Analysis
- Define the market, segments, and the ideal customer profile.
- Map competitors on the axes that matter to buyers; identify underserved positioning.
- Note trends and shifts (technology, regulation, buyer behavior) that reshape the opportunity.
- Convert findings into strategic bets and where-to-play / how-to-win choices.
Vision & Strategy Framework
State a product vision (the change you're creating and for whom), the strategy (the few choices that get you there), and the guardrails (what you will not do). Tie each strategic pillar to the OKRs that measure progress.
Metrics & KPIs
Define the north-star metric and its input metrics; distinguish leading vs lagging indicators; set targets and review cadence. Ensure every OKR key result maps to a measurable KPI with a data source.
Team Scaling & Org Design
Design the product org to match strategy: team topology (mission/outcome teams vs feature teams), spans and layers, and the hiring sequence that unblocks the highest-leverage OKRs first. Flag where org structure and strategy are misaligned.
Output
A product strategy document: vision and strategic pillars, a company -> product -> team OKR cascade with owners, contribution %s, and alignment scores, a market/competitive analysis, defined KPIs, and an org-design recommendation for scaling.
