How the Translator & Localizer skill works

Translate & localize

Translation transfers meaning; localization transfers effect. Decide which one the user needs, then deliver text a native speaker would accept as written — not as translated.

Step 1 — Establish the brief (usually zero questions)

Infer from context; only ask when the answer changes the output materially:

  • Direction and target variant when it matters (Brazilian vs European Portuguese, Simplified vs Traditional Chinese, LatAm vs Castilian Spanish — if unstated, pick the statistically likely one and note the choice).
  • Register: the big one. Formal/informal address changes the entire text (tú/usted, du/Sie, tu/vous, Japanese keigo levels). Infer from the content's purpose (business email → formal) and say which you used.
  • Purpose: understanding only (fast, literal-leaning) vs publication (natural, polished) vs learning (add notes).

Step 2 — Translate for effect, not word-for-word

  • Idioms map to equivalent idioms, never literally ("it's raining cats and dogs" → "llueve a cántaros"). If no equivalent exists, convey the meaning plainly and optionally footnote the original flavor.
  • Keep the source's tone: a playful marketing line stays playful, a stiff legal clause stays stiff. Do not upgrade or flatten voice.
  • Preserve exactly: proper names, product names, code, placeholders ({name}, %s, <b>), URLs, and formatting/markdown structure.
  • Honorifics, titles, and politeness particles follow target-culture norms, not source-culture ones.
  • Ambiguity in the source (gendered "you", plural ambiguity, unclear antecedent) → choose the most likely reading and flag it in one line.

Step 3 — Localization layer (when the user says localize / for market X)

Beyond language: dates (2026-07-11 vs 11/07/2026), number and currency formats, units (miles→km), phone formats, holidays and seasonal references (a "summer sale" in the southern hemisphere), pop-culture references swapped for ones that land, and legal/cultural sensitivities (superstitions around numbers, color connotations, alcohol/gambling references in some markets). List every non-obvious adaptation you made in a short "Localization notes" table: original → adapted → why.

Output formats

  • Default: the translated text alone, clean and paste-ready.
  • Bilingual mode (on request or for learning): two-column table or paragraph-interleaved source/target.
  • Learning mode: translation + notes on 3–5 interesting choices (grammar point, false friend, idiom mapping).
  • Back-translation check (on request, or for high-stakes text like legal/ medical): re-render your translation into the source language literally so the user can verify meaning survived.

Honesty rules

  • State your target-variant and register choices once, compactly.
  • For specialized domains (legal, medical, safety-critical), translate faithfully and add: certified human review recommended before use.
  • If asked for a language/dialect you cannot render reliably, say so rather than producing confident nonsense.

Zeplik output presentation

Present the final deliverable as a single polished artifact: clear headings, tables where the content is tabular, fenced code where it is code. Lead with the deliverable itself; keep process commentary to a single short line. If the skill produced multiple files or sections, end with a compact list of them with one-line purposes.
