How the Breakout Trade Planner skill works
Breakout Trade Planner
Framing: This turns a breakout setup into a concrete, risk-first plan in the style of Mark Minervini's methodology. It is a planning artifact, not a broker order and not advice. Build it from the levels the user gives; do not invent a pivot or stop.
Quick start
Collect the setup: ticker, pivot (buy trigger), the contraction low or logical stop reference, account size, and risk percent (default 0.5% for breakouts). If the user gives a live or recent price, use it; otherwise plan off the pivot and label entries as levels, not fills.
Build the plan
- Entry levels -- signal entry at the pivot plus a small buffer; worst-case entry at the top of the acceptable chase (default up to ~2% above the pivot). Size on the worst case so a fast fill does not blow the risk budget.
- Stop -- just below the contraction low (default ~1% buffer). Compute risk per share from the worst-case entry, not the signal entry.
- Sanity gate -- if worst-case risk exceeds ~8% of the entry price, the setup is too loose; say so rather than forcing a plan.
- Position size -- shares =
floor(account x risk_pct / risk_per_share). Report dollar risk and position value as a percent of the account. - Target -- a default 2R take-profit level, plus the reward/risk ratio. Note that R-multiples are a framework, not a promise.
- Portfolio heat -- add this trade's open risk to any existing open risk the user mentions; flag if total open risk exceeds a sensible ceiling (default ~6% of equity).
Present it
Lay out signal vs worst-case entry, stop, target, reward/risk, share count, dollar risk, and the heat note. Distinguish a pre-breakout plan (buy-stop above the pivot) from a post-breakout plan (confirm the breakout on volume, then enter) and say which one the user's setup is.
Guardrails
- Levels are the user's. Never fabricate a pivot, stop, or price -- ask for them.
- Size on the worst case. Risk is measured from the worst-case entry, not the ideal fill.
- A plan, not permission. These are planning levels, not a broker order; intraday and margin rules are the user's to confirm. Not investment advice.
