How the Backtest Expert skill works
Backtest Expert
Framing: The goal of a backtest is to try to break the idea, not to confirm it. A result that only looks good under one parameter set on one period is not an edge. Interpret the user's own figures; this is methodology, not advice.
Quick start
Establish what the user actually has: a strategy hypothesis, a rule set, a data range, and any result metrics. Then work through robustness and bias before trusting a single headline number.
Beat the idea to death
- Parameter robustness -- does the edge survive a neighborhood of parameter values, or only the one tuned value? A sharp cliff around the "best" setting signals curve-fitting.
- Out-of-sample / walk-forward -- was the strategy tuned on one segment and tested on unseen data? In-sample-only results overstate the edge.
- Regime slices -- does it hold across bull, bear, and chop, or does one period carry it?
- Trade count -- too few trades means the statistics are noise, not signal.
Audit for bias
- Look-ahead bias -- any input using data not available at decision time.
- Survivorship bias -- a universe that silently dropped delisted or bankrupt names.
- Overfitting -- many parameters or filters tuned to the same history.
- Costs -- realistic slippage, commissions, and fill assumptions; frictionless backtests lie.
Interpret the metrics
Read CAGR alongside max drawdown (not in isolation), risk-adjusted return (Sharpe/Sortino), win rate with average win/loss (a low win rate can still be excellent), and the equity-curve shape (smooth vs one lucky run). Ask for whichever the user did not provide rather than assuming.
Guardrails
- Skepticism first. Treat a great-looking result as a hypothesis to falsify, not a green light.
- Figures are the user's. Interpret provided numbers; do not fabricate backtest results.
- Past is not future. A robust backtest lowers the odds of self-deception; it is not a guarantee and not advice to trade.
